Olmec MD 1 in 8000 with Sheffield hole in one

29th August 2012

According to the National Hole in One Club, the chances of an average golfer getting a hole in one is 8000 to one (some even raise those odds to as high as 33,000/1 for an amateur golfer!)  So, managing director of Sheffield company Olmec Advance Materials and Surelight, Paul Lancaster, (happy to consider himself an average golfer) is absolutely cock a hoop to have performed the amazing feat for the first time in his life recently and what a great way to do it.

On one of the very few glorious sunny and breathlessly warm evenings we have had the pleasure of this summer, Paul hit the ball with perfect trajectory on the par 3 fourth hole at his home club of Sickleholme in the beautiful Peak District, where, on average,  only one golfer a year achieves this dream.  Paul says -I heard the ball strike the pin but couldn't really see it properly from the tee even through my Bushnell distance measuring device  so I have to admit to having had the a small dose of the butterflies as I approached the tee.  The excitement only turned into reality as I got about 30 yards away and could see that I had achieved my first hole in one, as the ball sat in the hole, propped up against the pin! I'm not sure if I can register with the Hole in One Club as it was not a competitive round, but that doesn't really matter - I will never forget the shot! With a current handicap of 15, after taking up the sport only 3 years ago, Paul is clearly a keen golfer, and like many, has an ambition to hit a single figure handicap.  Unlike many, however, he is aiming to do it in the next 12 months; quite a big ask you might say, but if his tenacity in having created such a thriving business as Olmec and Surelightin Sheffield is  anything to go by, he almost certainly will do it.  He recognises the time and effort achieving any goal demands, so let's hope that having taken on a new salesman, Simon, and planning a joint venture with Sheffield College to further his business expansion plans, he will find more time to concentrate on his sporting ambitions and maybe even achieve the even more elusive second hole in one!.
