Police cyber crime expert heads up data protection seminar

11th August 2017

A police cyber crime expert will be heading up a seminar forearming businesses ahead of major changes to data protection laws.

DCI Vanessa Smith, Head of Yorkshire and Humber Cyber Crime Unit, will be speaking at GDPR: What Every Business Needs to Know - an informative event being organised by Sheffield data and confidential waste management specialists Russell Richardson on September 21. The 39 year-old family firm, based in Attercliffe, is responding to the increasing concerns of its customers - thousands of SMEs across Yorkshire and the UK - ahead of the new General Data Protection Regulation laws to be introduced to the UK in May 2018. -Everyone is talking about GDPR, but many do not know what impact it will have on their business or what they need to do to be ready, said Emma Moorhouse, Russell Richardson's marketing manager. -We are getting scores of questions. We know some of the answers but this is an extremely complex issue with major compliance implications for everyone - from sole traders to multinational corporates. DCI Smith's presentation at the free event will draw on her expertise and experience in dealing with real cases of cyber crime and give tips to enable businesses to become cybersecure. Kelham Island-based data protection consultant Matt Bruce, of Bruce and Butler, will be explaining the regulation changes and Russell Richardson's specialists will be answering questions on physical data security, storage and destruction. Russell Richardson's confidential shredding, archiving and recycling service includes a fleet of mobile shredding trucks and collection vehicles which operate daily throughout the UK, and the Sheffield City Region's only shredding plant, which deals with up to 200 tonnes of waste paper and commercially sensitive, branded, counterfeit or faulty products every week at the rate of seven tonnes an hour. The company also operates a Secure Document Archiving centre for companies needing to store confidential data for up to 100 years. Demand is expected to soar in the lead up to the introduction of GDPR. Clients include the head office of the Formula One Grand Prix team, numerous police forces, motor giants and famous British fashion designers. Staged at The Quadrant business centre off the Parkway, the seminar commences with networking at 9am and runs until 11.30am.
