Police cyber crime expert heads up free GDPR seminar

24th January 2018

Local companies are confused about strict new data protection laws to be introduced in May, warns a leading confidential data and waste management specialist.

Russell Richardson, which operates Sheffield City Region's only shredding plant, is staging its second free advice session on General Data Protection Regulation after demand from anxious businesses. A police cyber crime specialist will be one of two key speakers at the event on February 7. The 40 year-old Attercliffe firm staged a GDPR seminar in September and has been flooded with appeals for another before the new laws come in on May 25. -Companies are worried, said Emma Moorhouse, Russell Richardson's marketing manager. -We are getting scores of questions. This is an extremely complex issue with major compliance implications for sole traders to multinational corporates. Alice Rumley, PROTECT Delivery Officer for Yorkshire and Humber Regional Cyber Unit, will draw on real cases of cyber crime in an interactive presentation and give tips for keeping cybersecure. Kelham Island-based data protection consultant Matt Bruce, of Bruce and Butler, will explain the changes and Russell Richardson's specialists will be answering questions on physical data security, storage and destruction. The company deals with up to 200 tonnes of waste paper and commercially sensitive, branded, counterfeit or faulty products every week for clients across the UK and operates a Secure Document Archiving Centre. The event, at The Quadrant business centre, Parkway, starts with networking at 9am and ends at 11.30am.
