Professor Liz Mossop appointed as new Vice-Chancellor at Sheffield Hallam University

Following an extensive and highly competitive recruitment and selection process, supported by an executive search agency, Professor Liz Mossop has been appointed as the next Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University.

The selection committee, including members of the Board of Governors, staff and the President of the Students’ Union, were impressed by the alignment of Liz’s personal values and her passion for teaching and the transformative power of education with the values of the University, whose mission is to transform lives.  

In response to her appointment, Liz said:

“It is an honour and privilege to be appointed as Vice-Chancellor at Sheffield Hallam. The University’s strong civic mission and values align completely with the role I feel universities should be playing in society today. I am very excited to be coming to join the Hallam community, meeting new colleagues and students and connecting with the city and region.” 

Chair of Sheffield Hallam Board of Governors, Meg Munn, said:

“Professor Mossop brings to Hallam significant leadership skills and a record of demonstrable achievements in improving academic experience. We are confident that she has the vision to continue to build Hallam's role as a key institution in the Sheffield city region and to develop our new London campus." 

Professor Mossop has developed a strong academic career in higher education leadership. Currently, Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Lincoln, she leads an academic community of 18,000 students and 1,100 academic colleagues, and around a third of professional service colleagues focused on the student experience. Prior to this, she was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Engagement and Development at Lincoln, after leaving the University of Nottingham as Professor of Veterinary Education alongside a senior leadership role in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. 

Liz began her career as a veterinary surgeon and is a graduate of the University of Edinburgh. With a commitment to science and education, Liz continues to contribute actively to her research field. She was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy in 2016. Liz is a Council member of the Academy of Medical Educators, a member of the Teaching Excellence Framework panel, Board member of Nottingham College and Vice Chair of the European Veterinary Accreditation Committee, as well as making significant contribution to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. 

Liz will join Sheffield Hallam as Vice-Chancellor in January 2024.
