Progressive Safety Celebrate 65 Years in Business

14th February 2025

As Progressive Safety steps into its 65th year of operation, the company reflects on an incredible journey that has transformed it from a local supplier to a trusted name in safety equipment across the globe.

Starting with humble beginnings in the mining industry, Progressive Safety has significantly expanded its product lineup to include a diverse range of high-quality workwear and safety equipment now recognised and relied upon throughout the UK and beyond. The company's approach has always been rooted in strong customer relationships, prioritising exceptional customer service and providing a wide selection of products to meet the needs of its customers and partners.

For decades, Progressive Safety has been a vital partner to builders’ merchants and trade counters, enhancing customer engagement through impactful point-of-sale displays. As a family-owned business, it has remained steadfast in its commitment to maintaining a steady supply of core products, ensuring that customers have access to a comprehensive inventory of essentials such as work trousers, outdoor jackets, and safety boots. Progressive Safety sets an industry standard with its robust logistics strategy, dispatching stocked items the same day for next-day delivery, all supported by a dedicated operations team.

In a strategic move for the future, Anna Topham, granddaughter of founder John Topham, last year assumed the role of Managing Director. Taking the helm as the company transitions away from a long-standing licensing agreement, Anna is focused on broadening the range of home brands, which will provide greater control over quality and product variety. Her vision aims to build upon the legacy set by her father, Howard Topham, who has contributed to the business since 1977 and remains an influential figure, alongside the spirits of her grandfather, who is sadly no longer with them.

When asked for comment Anna Topham said; ‘Our business is built on hard work, and we couldn't have achieved our success without the significant contributions of each employee over the past sixty-six years, past, present, and future. I extend my gratitude to everyone who has worked alongside us. We take pride in shaping the future of workwear and footwear by manufacturing unique ranges under our various brands. Our significant stockholding, expansion of our brand offerings, operational effectiveness, and a digital-first, sustainable sales and marketing strategy position us well for future growth. With a strong reputation both in the UK and internationally, I am eager to see how our team can drive new and exciting developments in the coming months. You can expect to hear a lot more from us moving forward.”

As Progressive Safety reflects on its rich history, it draws on a wealth of experience that sets it apart in the industry and informs its future direction amidst ongoing changes. With enhanced safety standards raising the bar for protection, the company is committed to excellence. Its membership with the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) and its ongoing dedication to refreshing and improving its product range ensures that customers can confidently rely on Progressive Safety to meet and exceed industry standards.

Furthermore, Progressive Safety has ambitious growth plans on the horizon. The company is partnering with both large and small businesses to expand its selection, now boasting over 100 in-stock footwear styles. The refresh and increased selection of the Worktough brand brings an expanding range of quality and durable workwear, providing customers access to modern pieces designed with wear-resisting features. These initiatives aim to address the challenges of unprecedented supply chain disruptions while laying the groundwork for innovative future developments.

As Progressive Safety celebrates this remarkable 65th milestone, it looks ahead with excitement and determination. The company is poised to further enhance the safety and protection of workers in every corner of the globe, continuing its legacy of commitment to worksite protection for many years to come.
