Public invited to Olympic Legacy Park event

A special event is being held in Sheffield giving members of the local community the chance to find out more about the multi-million pound Olympic Legacy Park (OLP).

South East Sheffield MP, Clive Betts, and project lead, the Rt. Hon Richard Caborn, will host the community event at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) on Thursday, 12 March, at 6pm. There will be presentations about the OLP set to be one of the biggest and most unique Olympic legacy projects in Europe - followed by a question and answer session. Members of the public can find out about the park's sport, leisure and recreation facilities available for the local community to use to improve their health and wellbeing with presentations from Sheffield Eagles rugby league team and Sheffield Sharks basketball team. They can hear about plans for a state-of-the-art Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre (AWRC) the centrepiece of the park which will become home to around 50 researchers and laboratories carrying out world-leading physical activity research. Information will also be available about the Oasis Academy, which is currently being built on the park and will provide education and learning facilities for 1,200 two to 19-year-olds and Sheffield's second University Technical College which will provide courses in Human Sciences and Computing for 14 to 18 year olds The Olympic Legacy Park, in the East End of Sheffield, is a joint venture between Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield City Council. Richard Caborn said: -The Olympic Legacy Park is a hugely exciting development for Sheffield and this event will be an opportunity for local people to hear about plans for the site, progress being made and how they can benefit from the facilities. -As well as being a world-class site centre for health and wellbeing research, the park will be designed with public facilities for the local community to use for sport, leisure and recreation. The Olympic Legacy Park will include a multi-purpose, indoor community sports and events arena, outdoor synthetic pitch, cycleways and public green spaces.
