It is our honour to remember Sir Norman Adsetts: A Visionary Leader and Champion of Sheffield's Business Community and a Past President of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Chamber, Sheffield and its vibrant business community mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, Sir Norman, who passed away on 25th April 2023, at the age of 92. As we bid farewell today to this visionary leader and esteemed member of society, we reflect on Sir Norman's profound impact as the Past President of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, leaving an indelible mark on the city's economic landscape.
Born on 6th March 1931, in Manchester, moving to Sheffield 1934. Throughout his life, he exemplified dedication, tenacity, and an unwavering commitment to fostering growth and prosperity. Sir Norman's journey was an embodiment of the Sheffield spirit, as he rose from humble beginnings to become a prominent figure in the region's business sector.
Sir Norman first became involved with the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce in the early 1970s, when he started his illustrious career in the steel industry. Sir Norman spent over 30 years as managing director of Sheffield Insulations Group.
Recognised for his exceptional leadership skills and ability to navigate the complexities of the business world, he was elected President of the Chamber in 1988-89 a position he held with distinction.

During his time at the Chamber, Sir Norman played a pivotal role in promoting Sheffield as a hub of innovation and economic opportunity. With his forward-thinking vision, he sought to revitalise the city's manufacturing sector, driving job creation and fostering an environment conducive to entrepreneurial success. Sir Norman tirelessly advocated for Sheffield's businesses, both locally and on the national stage, ensuring their voices were heard and their interests protected.
Sir Norman had an unwavering commitment to supporting small enterprises and nurturing partnerships between businesses of all sizes contributing to the growth and vitality of the local economy. Sir Norman's passion for collaboration and his ability to bring diverse stakeholders together laid the foundation for enduring partnerships that continue to shape Sheffield's commercial landscape to this day.
Sir Norman was also a compassionate and philanthropic individual. He recognised the importance of giving back to the community that had shaped him, and he actively engaged in numerous charitable endeavours. His generosity extended to supporting local educational institutions, cultural organisations, and social initiatives, aiming to create a more inclusive and prosperous Sheffield for all.
Sir Norman's impact was recognised both within and beyond the borders of Sheffield. His remarkable achievements earned him several accolades and honours throughout his career, including a knighthood in 1999 for his services to industry and the local community. Yet, he remained humble and approachable, always willing to lend an ear and offer guidance to aspiring entrepreneurs and emerging leaders.
In retirement Sir Norman was impacted by his grandson’s autism and set up The Adsetts Partnership to support vulnerable people.
