Sew scrumptious! Pupils crafty Easter fundraiser

16th April 2014

Children from Beck Primary School in Sheffield have come up with a crafty way of raising money for charity.

The school's knitting club have been busy over the past few months making Easter Chicks, with each being sold for £1, including a scrumptious chocolate egg! The club is run by staff, Karen Leasley, Lisa Bower and Katie Lindop. Karen, Extended Schools Practitioner at the school explains, -We wanted something for the children to work towards as not only would this get them following a pattern but it would also involve them in the selling side. All money raised from the sales is being shared between buying new equipment for the club and Macmillan Cancer Support. Karen continues, -Everyone is affected in some way by cancer and Macmillan do a fantastic job and need all the help they can get. The children have been so excited to be doing something for a good cause and they have been selling really well with pupils, staff and parents. Charley, aged 10 is a member of the group and has loved every minute, she said, -We learn new things and have a laugh while knuckling down and knitting. You also meet new friends and we have learned new things and knitted fun things for charity which we loved doing. Charley's mum, Emma Bower from Shiregreen added, -The knitting club is fantastic. My child loves every minute of it. It has not only taught her something new but made her feel a sense of well-being by allowing her to raise money for a good cause. The school is hoping to have raised £150 and already is planning future knitting and sewing projects in the future.
