Sheffield auctioneer tops Yorkshire sales tables for 2016
8th February 2017
A Sheffield auctioneer has topped the Yorkshire and Humber results tables for 2016 with sales of more than £27million in the same week its first 'exceptional' auction of 2017 saw 100% of lots sold.
Mark Jenkinson and Son recorded the best results in Yorkshire and the Humber for 2016, in a report published by Essential Information (EI) Group, the same week all 27 lots in the firm's January auction sold. Mark Jenkinson and Son, which has offices in Sheffield and Chesterfield, beat off competition from more than 20 other auctioneers across the Yorkshire and the Humber region with sales of £27,882,250 in excess of £5 million more than the auctioneer that ranked in second place. The research by EI Group, which analyses UK-wide auction data and is recognised as the industry standard, also found Mark Jenkinson and Son sold 91.2% of lots between January and December last year compared with the average industry figure of 75.6% for the residential and commercial sectors. The results were published in the same week that the firm held its first auction of 2017 and sold 100% of lots a rare occurrence in the current market and the first time Mark Jenkinson has sold all lots for at least five years. Highlights from the auction included a stone-fronted semi-detached house on Banner Cross Road in Sheffield which attracted more than 100 viewings ahead of the Mark Jenkinson auction. Going under the hammer with a guide price of £250,000, the property in a sought-after location and retaining many original features - sold for £352,000, while a stone-built detached house in Linaker Road, Walkley, with a guide price of £78,000 had more than 60 viewings and went for £110,000. Industrial sites attracted a lot of interest at the auction, too, with a prominent corner plot of approximately 1.39 acres on the fringe of an established industrial estate in Kirk Sandall, Doncaster, that had a guide price of £200,000, but sold for £215,000. Also in Doncaster an industrial site of approximately 1.46 acres in Edenthorpe that had a guide price of £220,000 went for £225,000, and a former garage site in Sprotbrough, sold for nearly double the guide price of £25,000 at £49,000. Adrian Little, Head of the Auction Department at Mark Jenkinson and Son, said: -We are thrilled to be recognised as the top ranking individual auctioneer for sales in Yorkshire and the Humber for 2016. -But to begin 2017 with our first auction where we sold every single lot is exceptional and a very, very positive start. -It is a good barometer for our industry that people are buying in January as it shows they are looking ahead to Spring - when they will have developed the property and land to the point where they can sell it on again - and they are looking ahead with confidence to a healthy market in three months' time. -Both our EI ranking for 2016 and 100% successful sales in January mean we have kicked off the New Year on a high and are keeping up the momentum immediately. The day after our first auction we went live with details of our next by publishing our February catalogue. The next auction will be a regional local authority auction held on February 28 at 2pm at The Platinum Suite, Sheffield United Football Club.
