Sheffield boxing stars to pound streets for charity cash

5th March 2014

Two local boxing stars are swapping their gloves for running shoes as they take to the streets of Sheffield to raise money for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.

Professional boxers Adam Etches, from Birley, and Scott Jenkins, from Intake in Sheffield, are taking part in the city's annual half marathon as part of 'Team Weston Park' - a fundraising initiative that encourages people to enter organised running events and raise sponsorship for the region's only specialist cancer hospital. The boxing pair, who are both ambassadors for the Cancer Charity, have already started a strict training regime for the event, which takes place on Sunday 6th April, starting and finishing at the Don Valley Bowl. 'Hot shot' Scott, aged 22, a lightweight who is also training for his next fight on xx, said: -I'm so happy to be taking part in the half marathon and hope that people are able to support us as we train for the big race. I'll be adding a couple more long distance runs into training to make sure I can run the course in under two hours and beat Adam! -Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is a fantastic charity that helps save the lives of many and it is always a pleasure to take part in fundraising challenges to support them. Middleweight Adam, 23, said: -Running the race will be a bit different to boxing but I can't wait for the challenge! Supporting the charity will be worth the extra training and I really hope people can get behind us so we raise as much as possible! Weston Park Hospital is one of only four specialist cancer hospitals in England and serves a population of nearly 1.8million people from all across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire. Sarah Cross, charity fundraiser, said: -It's always great when Adam and Scott take part in fundraising activities, as it shows how much they care for the work we do. We really hope people get behind them as they take on the Sheffield Half Marathon as part of Team Weston Park. -Our 'Run & Raise' initiative encourages anyone, from seasoned runners to total beginners, to join Team Weston Park and raise vital funds to support pioneering cancer research and improve treatment and care for thousands of cancer patients. Throughout 2014, the Cancer Charity is marking its 20th anniversary by funding a wide variety of projects for the hospital, including the completion of the new Clinical Research Unit and the Day Case refurbishment. Sarah added: -We're encouraging people to challenge themselves in 2014 as part of the charity's 20th year and take part in a sponsored run, such as the Sheffield Half Marathon, with Team Weston Park. -It's a fantastic way to feel part of a running community while raising vital funds for the hospital. When runners sign up, they'll also receive a free charity running vest to proudly wear on race day.
