Sheffield Business School shortlisted for top award

5th September 2014

Sheffield Business School at Sheffield Hallam University is in the running for being named the best business school in the country at one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies for the university sector.

Sheffield Business School (SBS) has been shortlisted in the category for Business School of the Year the Times Higher Education (THE) awards (Twitter hashtag #THEawards), with the final winner to be announced on Thursday 27 November, at The Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Now in its 10th year, the Times Higher Education Awards celebrate the extraordinary things that are going on in our universities and colleges, day in, day out. The awards are well-known for showcasing the pioneering spirit, adaptability and sheer quality of the University sector. Judges at the awards will decide if Sheffield Business School the business school for business will scoop the award last won by Brunel Business School in 2013. Professor Adrian Hopgood, pro vice-chancellor and dean at Sheffield Business School said that SBS has a great chance at the awards because of the way it works with organisations, employers and industry leaders to give students the skills they need. Professor Hopgood said: "The quality of our teaching is internationally recognised. Our tourism, hospitality and international business management courses recently secured accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development. "We are one of only three institutions worldwide to hold EPAS accreditation for undergraduate hospitality and tourism courses and one of only six to gain this recognition for a postgraduate international business course. -We are innovative in our approach to learning, responding quickly and flexibly to the needs of employers and non-traditional learners. "Our ground-breaking fast-track degree with Nestlé which sees school-leavers combining study with paid work-based learning at the company has been widely heralded by industry, politicians and the media. -We also place a huge emphasis on supporting our students into their chosen careers throughout their studies with us, through high quality student placements, consultancy projects, and an Advisory Board of senior industry figures to offer the latest thinking in business support, advice and expertise. "In the year under review, 543 undergraduates undertook paid placements with companies as diverse as Rolls-Royce, GlaxoSmithKline, Marks & Spencer, Mandarin Oriental and Disney, and the figure has since grown to more than 600. -We are proud that 93 per cent of our 201213 graduates progressed into work or further study within six months, maintaining an upward trend. "We are even more proud that the Business School is highly rated by our students, with the 2013 National Student Survey showing that five of our courses achieved 100 per cent student satisfaction, and a further seven scored above 90 per cent. The more recently published results for 2014 show even more improvements, with overall satisfaction climbing by another two per cent. The Sheffield Business School has also invested heavily in the past year in new facilities for students, including a new £3.5m suite of teaching kitchens in which hospitality students now pursue their studies with the very latest equipment.
