Sheffield Chamber chief responds to latest devolution developments

2nd August 2017

Commenting on today's announcement that 17 councils in Yorkshire want to unite behind a devolution deal, Richard Wright, Sheffield Chamber's Executive Director said: -There is nothing wrong with local authorities in Yorkshire getting together.

It's what I would expect. We need to work closely together. -This should not stop South Yorkshire doing the Devolution deal that is on the table now though. Every year we delay we effectively lose £30million and the opportunity to borrow more. Going ahead with a South Yorkshire deal does not preclude a wider Yorkshire deal later. "One word of caution, however. How many layers of Government do we want? We are moving already to a position where we have National Government, Northern Powerhouse, Combined Authorities/LEPS, and Local Authorities. -I personally think this is enough and properly mixes national, regional and local control. Remember that it is the tax payer who funds all this bureaucracy!"
