Sheffield Charity Seeks 250 ‘Local Heroes’ in Launch of New Challenge

Local charity Cavendish Cancer Care launches its new challenge for 2020: The 250 Challenge.

The charity is looking for 250 local heroes, who will pledge to raise £250. The challenge launched on the 15th January, because the government funding that Cavendish Cancer Care receives only keeps the charity running for two weeks each year. This means that, if funding began on the 1st January, it would run out today. Cavendish Cancer Care relies almost entirely on the generosity of local people to keep its doors open to the 1900 local families who turn to them each year.

The challenge runs for 250 days but can take as much or as little of this time as is needed. You can do anything you like to raise the money, whether that’s running, baking, cycling, arts and crafts, or something else entirely.

Cavendish Cancer Care supports people affected by cancer in South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire - including family, carers and loved ones as well as patients themselves. They also support children through a specialised Young People’s Service all of which is provided on a free of charge basis.

Cressida, 58, is one of the 1,900 people who benefitted from Cavendish services in 2019. After being diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour “out of the blue”, Cressida came to Cavendish for support. “Cavendish taught me coping techniques, which helped me get through my radiotherapy sessions without getting panicked or upset. One of the things I really appreciate about Cavendish is its connection to conventional healthcare - I’ve always felt safe there. You can put your trust in them, because they take care of people with cancer every day. Cavendish have been a big part of helping me to keep going on my journey.”
