Sheffield family optometrist supports outdoor play initiative

18th June 2019

A Sheffield family optometrist has lent its support to a campaign to encourage children (and adults) to enjoy the great outdoors.

Alex Gage, owner of Alex Gage Family Optometrist in Woodseats and Crosspool, is delighted that Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is repeating its 30 Days Wild initiative that runs throughout June. Mr Gage advises that the benefits of outdoor play go beyond general health and are documented to slow the progression of myopia in children: "There has been a huge rise around the globe in short-sightedness, or myopia, over recent decades and research suggests that lack of natural light seems to a key factor. "Children who spend just 90 minutes a day outdoors are reducing their risk of myopia and getting involved in the 30 Days Wild activities is a great way to do this. "It's not too late to sign up. Simply visit www.wildlifetrusts.org.uk/30DaysWild and sign up to receive inspirational ideas, stickers and wildflower seeds for your garden. Not only will you see a difference in the garden, but you'll be helping your vision too." Eye examinations are free for children and students in full time education up to the age of 19. Book an appointment online or call or pop in to either Woodseats or Crosspool for more information. Alex runs his practices with wife and fellow optometrist, Sarah Gage.
