Sheffield Food Festival Reveals Mouth-Watering Programme

8th May 2015

A pop-up farmyard complete with feathered friends, a mini-beer festival featuring local ales and cooking masterclasses with some of the region's best chefs are just a few of the highlights that will be on offer at this year's Sheffield Food Festival.

Now in its fifth year, the Sheffield Hallam University-organised festival has issued its new programme for this year's festival, which will take place on the bank holiday weekend between Saturday 23 May and Monday 25 May. This year the festival will be held at the heart of the city, with visitors being able to eat, drink and shop in and around the Peace Gardens, Winter Gardens and Millennium Square. Millennium Square will be turned into a pop-up farmyard by Whirlow Hall Farm Trust, with kids able to check out a tractor and meet some farmyard animals, before clambering amongst the hay bales to listen to readings of 'The Little Red Hen'. Chef demos will return to the Peace Gardens, with the likes of Simon Ayres, from the Cross Scythes at Totley, and Michelin starred chef Rupert Rowley from Fischer's showing off their cooking flair and expertise. BBC Radio Sheffield will once again return to stage a local version of Ready, Steady, Cook, where two presenters will attempt to create a culinary sensation with just £5 of ingredients and 30 minutes to spare. Other family fun activities will include the chance to have a spin on a smoothie bike provided by school food provider Taylor Shaw, learning about growing produce from seeds as part of the National Trust campaign to 'plant it, grow it, eat it' and getting involved in spaghetti and marshmallow construction with Sheffield Hallam University. As well as being able to sample delicious food from the many market stalls and street food traders across the festival, adults will be able to enjoy locally brewed ales at mini-beer festival and learn more about craft beer and food pairings with Abbeydale Road's Hop Hideout and local restaurant and bar Anchorage. During Saturday The Moor will be getting in on the action with a 'Taste Moor' event, offering free activities which celebrate food through Sheffield cultures, crafts, performances, dancing and cookery demonstrations. Festival champion Niki Baker said: "Once again Sheffield's local food community has pulled together to help offer a mouth-watering line-up. The event seems to go from strength to strength and we are all looking forward to a weekend filled with family fun and tasty treats. Richard Eyre, head of city centre management and major events at Sheffield City Council, said: -I look forward to welcoming the food festival back to Sheffield city centre and celebrating the very best of what our fine city has to tempt the tastebuds. -Sheffield is famous for its entrepreneurial and creative spirit, so it will be especially pleasing to showcase what our independent traders have to offer, from locally-sourced meat, fruit and veg through to fine dining, real ales and craft beers. Niki added: "The popular Peace Gardens, Winter Gardens and Millennium Square will be great venues for what promises to be our best event yet. Now in its fifth year, the Sheffield Food Festival has established itself as a champion of the City's food scene."
