Sheffield Hallam academics recognised as leading researchers in their field

More than 20 current and former Sheffield Hallam academics feature in Elsevier and Stanford University’s 2024 list of the world’s most-cited scholars of their fields, demonstrating the reach and impact of research taking place at the University.

Earlier this month Elsevier and Stanford University released the latest iteration of the prestigious list, which identifies the world's leading researchers, representing approximately two per cent of all scientists worldwide.

The recently released data looks at academics who are most frequently referenced in the work of other scholars across the last year as well as throughout their career history. It ranks the top 100,000 names from the more than 8 million scientists considered to be active worldwide, taking into account 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields. 

The 23 Sheffield Hallam researchers who appear in the list specialise in a range of subfields including physical sciences, economics, engineering, education, public health, medicine and social sciences. 

Professor of Maternal and Infant Health, Hora Soltani, who has 25-years’ experience leading research to reduce health inequalities for women and babies, is one of four senior researchers from the University’s School of Health and Social Care to make the list. Her work, supported by external funding bodies, has contributed to shaping policy and practice nationally and internationally.

Also on the list is Professor of Cancer Research, Liam Bourke, who leads several high-profile clinical trials of oncology outcomes, including National Institute for Health Research funded projects and strategic partnerships with Nuffield Health.

Professor of Clinical Epidemiology, George Peat, features on the list for his research to understand and improve musculoskeletal health and care, particularly osteoarthritis.

Professor of Statistics and Health Economic modelling, Khaled Khatab, is included for his research on Bayesian statistical methods and their application to epidemiology and health.

Other researchers also on the list include:

• Associate Professor in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Dr Yasanur Kayikci, who has led large-scale externally funded projects into digital supply chain transformation and sustainable solutions.
• Professor of English Language and Literature, Alice Bell, for her research into digital fiction including how readers cognitively process it.
• Professor of Glass and Ceramics Paul Bingham leads several research projects, supported by diverse funding bodies, into low-energy, low-carbon glasses and ceramics, radioactive waste management, industrial symbiosis and net-zero manufacturing technologies.
