A week of events celebrating careers in the games industry and aiming to inspire the next generation of games professionals is underway in Sheffield.

Games Careers Week 2023, co-sponsored by Sheffield Hallam University, is a celebration of games careers involving nationwide events from over 120 organisations aimed at young people, parents, learners, teachers, and jobseekers.

Games Careers Week, which runs from Monday 19 June to Friday 23 June, aims to stimulate interest in and raise the profile of the games industry as an employment destination, as well as providing a focus point for those interested in developing games as a career in the future.

Sheffield Hallam’s involvement this year will provide a unique platform to present the University’s gaming courses to a wide audience, from children to teenagers, and to demonstrate the excellent work current students have produced.

Dr Paul Parry, subject group lead for applied computing, said:

“Sheffield Hallam University is proud to sponsor and be involved with Games Careers Week. It presents a unique, week-long opportunity to work with the nationally known Sheffield-based National Videogames Museum. Through a range of exciting events during the week, it allows the University to showcase both our courses and student work to a wide audience, raise the profile of the games industry and demonstrate the exciting employment opportunities for future gaming-related professionals.”

Sheffield Hallam University will also be present at The National Videogame Museum’s Games Careers Fair on 22 and 23 June providing advice and activities for invited schools. The fair will also be open to the public from 1pm – 4pm on both days. Tickets to the museum can be purchased via their website.

The games careers fair will include workshops, careers exhibits, Q&A sessions with industry experts as well as a chance to explore the museum which has unique exhibitions and over 100 playable video games.

At the Sheffield Hallam open day on Saturday 24 June, visitors can also discover the following games career courses; Computer Games Technologies, Computer Science for Games, Game Art, Game Design and Development, Digital Media Production and Esports Management. Visit the course pages to find out more. Sheffield Hallam’s gaming and computing facilities are also available to visit on the day.

Games Careers Week is organised by The National Videogame Museum. The Museum, alongside its sponsors and partners, will deliver activities, inspiring events and provide online resources throughout this week-long national festival.

Stacey Jubb, head of learning at The National Videogame Museum, said:

"Games Careers Week 2023 is an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the fantastic range of careers in the videogames industry. Over 20 organisations are already involved, aiming to encourage and nurture young people’s passion to enter the industry, as well as helping parents understand the credibility of a career in games.

“The National Videogame Museum are excited to be hosting a two-day Games Careers Fair for 500 students invited from high pupil premium schools, SEND and alternative FE providers to experience our interactive museum, speak to industry professionals and access free STEAM based workshops. We are very grateful to sponsors, Boneloaf, co-sponsors Sheffield Hallam University and supporters Creative Assembly for their generosity and support in making Games Careers Week 2023 a reality."
