Sheffield Hallam recruits hundreds of students through clearing

20th August 2018

Thousands of students were celebrating today after being offered places on courses at Sheffield Hallam University through clearing.

Nearly 400 staff were on hand from 6.30am this morning to answer the telephones in a specially created 'Clearing Suite' as the giant operation to offer places got underway. The university converted 14 rooms into a huge call centre which was staffed by 139 frontline call handlers. An additional 200 academic staff and 70 volunteers worked behind the scenes to give potential students more information about courses. In total the team took over 3,000 calls between 6.30am and 4pm - and the lines are open until 7pm tonight. Nicola Rawlins, director of admissions and UK student recruitment at Sheffield Hallam University, said: "I'd like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who has been offered a place at SHU, we really look forward to meeting you in the autumn. "For those students who did not get the results they had hoped for, there are many options available to you through clearing and we are here to help and guide you through the process. "We still have a number of places available for students across a broad range of courses but we expect places to fill up quickly so encourage you to contact us quickly to discuss your plans. "Sheffield Hallam offers a great university experience that combines academic rigour with professional practice and there are various ways you can contact us during the clearing period to find out more - on the phone, via social media or in person at a number of local schools." She added: "Clearing is the ultimate expression of being part of Team Hallam and so many people at the university play an important role in making it happen." The telephone line - 0330 024 6390 - closes at 6.30pm tonight but re-opens tomorrow from 7am until 7pm, Saturday from 10am until 4pm and then on Monday 20 August to Friday 24 August from 9am until 5pm. The university is also holding two clearing open days which take place on Saturday 18 August and Tuesday 21 August for those who are interested in applying or have already applied through clearing for an undergraduate, PGCE or pre-registration health and social care course starting from September 2018. Find out more at www.shu.ac.uk In 2017 the team at Hallam took 3, 449 clearing calls on A Level results day and 1,200 offers were made.
