Sheffield Hallam success at the Games Industry Awards

25th October 2023

Students from Sheffield Hallam University have taken home one award and were shortlisted in three other categories at the TIGA Games Industry Awards 2023.

The awards recognise outstanding students, education providers and best practice within the UK’s video games industry.

Sheffield Hallam students Benjamin Kimberly and Chae Taylor were both shortlisted for Outstanding TIGA Graduate of the Year: Programmer and Outstanding TIGA Postgraduate of the Year, with Benjamin winning the Outstanding TIGA Graduate of the Year: Programmer award.

On his award win, Benjamin said:

“The win felt amazing and I’m still wrapping my head around it to be honest. It felt really good to get such a prestigious award, making the results of the time, dedication, and effort put into my studies over the years that much more real and satisfying. The lecturers have been amazing throughout and no level of recommendation could do it justice; helpful, insightful, encouraging, and willing to give back as much as you put in (and more).”

Sheffield Hallam was also shortlisted for the Excellence in Games Research award, as well as Creative Assembly Best Student Game for Death Rebuke.

Andrew Hamilton, course leader for computer science for games, said:

"This award is testament to Ben's focus and determination on the course and his passion for games programming. Ben is a fantastic programmer and has demonstrated a great understanding of C++ and low-level console graphics programming.

"The sheer amount of students shortlisted represents a fantastic year for games programming courses here at SHU and our continued commitment to games development excellence through games@hallam. I would like to personally congratulate Ben and all those shortlisted and wish you all the best in your future careers."
