Sheffield Software Company Secures Funding to Expand into Rail Sector

31st July 2014

Software development business 3Squared, based in Sheffield, has been awarded a grant from the Regional Growth Fund (RGF) to advance its competency management solution with the rail sector.

The support from the RGF will allow 3Squared to grow its business, recruiting in the local area for talent to support the development and sale of the RailSmart solution. This innovative technology solution allows train operating companies to better manage the competencies of its train drivers and crew, makes the training and development of staff more effective and reduces risks to passengers and to the business. Tim Jones, Managing Director of 3Squared, said: -This is fantastic news and shows that the Sheffield Local Enterprise Partnership recognises the importance of development within the digital industries.  As a result of securing this funding, we will be able to create new jobs and have a dedicated resource to commit to expanding our software specifically for the rail sector.  We are very excited about developing the software to bring real efficiencies and savings for rail sector businesses. The Competency Management software enables train operators to manage risk by building up a complete risk profile of its drivers.  This includes capturing medical assessment information and drivers licence details for overseas drivers, as well as managing assessment schedules for pre and post qualified drivers and reporting analytics through an insight tool. The tablet application makes it easier to carry out driver assessments, allows assessors to review a completed assessment with the driver and access drivers/crews' profile details and assessment history. Tim Jones adds: -For train operators, this technology has far reaching benefits.  It enables them to ensure compliance by proactively managing the competencies of employees.  It reduces the cost of compliance, improves staff retention and provides better resource management.  We are really excited about the opportunity to expand our team and carry out further development work of our Competency Management App within the rail sector, with the support of this funding. 3Squared's Competency Management tool is part of the SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment and Quality) software suite, a range of products aimed at improving both the safety and efficiency of a workforce in a range of industries from construction and manufacturing to rail. The software is very user friendly and allows employees competencies to be stored, reviewed and updated. It also allows certificates and awards to be uploaded and saved on an employee profile. 3Squared is a software development consultancy with offices in Sheffield and London. It is at the forefront in the use of technology to deliver change and innovation to clients in the construction, manufacturing, financial, health and electronics industry.  The company has over 10 years of experience in helping organisations to use the latest technology to overcome business problems, improve efficiency and save money.
