Sheffield specialist lighting company supplies energy efficient high bay LED lights to Network Rail

31st May 2013

Sheffield specialist lighting company, Olmec Advanced Materials/Surelight, is delighted to have supplied around 100 of its energy efficient high bay LED lights to Network Rail for its new, state of the art concrete sleeper factory in Doncaster.

Sleepers are the supports for the rails on railway tracks which in the past were wooden. The Trackwork Moll factor, which will produce around 400,000 of the 700,000 sleepers that Network Rail needs every year, is seen by Martin Elwood, director of Network Rail's national delivery service, as 'crucial' in delivering 'better value for money whilst maintaining a safe, reliable network'. Sheffield's W. Wright Electrical was the mechanical and electrical contractor involved in this project and Surelight worked closely with Ian Scholey of W. Wright, generating all the relevant photometric proposals for this project. The low energy LED lamp chosen was the Phobos high bay which has a minimum anticipated life of at least 5 years. The predicted life of Surelight's LED Phobos is three times better than traditional high bay luminaries, providing significant financial savings in energy and maintenance. Maintaining high bay lighting can be a costly operation; resulting in loss of production and requiring the use of cherry pickers or scaffolding as well as lots of man hours. Reduced maintenance means improved productivity and reduced downtime. Surelight is also helping Network Rail do its bit for the environment in its modern and prestigious factory, as the Probus high bay lamps are mercury free unlike metal halides. Paul Lancaster, managing director of Olmec/Surelight says -in addition to all of the benefits already described, Probus high bay LED lights are simple to install, offer the same or improved illumination levels as traditional high bay lights and can provide instant on/off lighting, which may be allied to a smart control system. Network Rail and Trackwork Moll are really onto a winner.
