Sheffield Young Carers get big lottery boost!

20th February 2013

A vital service for young carers in Sheffield has been given a fantastic boost by the Big Lottery Fund.

Sheffield Young Carers Project has been awarded a grant of £143,541 which will fully-fund their successful Family Project over the next three years. Katie Borland, Sheffield Young Carers Fundraising Officer said: -We're over the moon about our Big Lottery Fund grant, we've been supporting young carers since 1997 and demand for our services has never been greater. Our Family Project is special because it offers support to the whole family both the young carer and the family members they care for. -This fantastic three-year grant means our Family Worker can continue providing practical and emotional support to families who are struggling with mental health and/or substance misuse problems. -We work with eight to 21 year-olds, but some of the young carers we support have been caring since they were just four or five years old. We'll be able to help more families like Josie's. Her mum has bipolar disorder and she suffers from depression and anxiety. Her dad suffers from depression too because he has been out of work for health reasons. -Our Family Worker has helped to reduce Josie's caring role and encouraged her to join our young carers' group and make new friends. She's helped Josie's mum to develop more confidence, supported Josie's dad with his job hunting, and secured a Carer's Break for the whole family. -It's such a relief that we'll be able to extend this support to more families in Sheffield now. We are very grateful to the Big Lottery Fund for helping us to achieve even more for young carers. Sheffield Young Carers Project relies on the support of the Sheffield community.
