Sheffield’s New Cancer Robot Cuts Its Own Ribbon
20th April 2026
The robot will make a huge difference to hundreds of cancer patients and their families.
Sheffield Hospitals Charity have helped bring something really special to Sheffield. Thanks to their incredible supporters, they made their largest ever single donation of £1.45m to bring a surgical robot to the Northern General.
On Friday 17th April, there was an unveiling to celebrate its arrival where the robot even cut its own ribbon.
This isn’t just impressive; it’s life changing. The robot lets surgeons work in hard-to-reach areas with robotic arms using flexible, fully rotating wrists. It has a high-definition 3D view that allows them to see up to ten times more than the naked eye. This means the size of a 2p coin is enlarged to the size of a dinner plate. These enhancements mean smaller incisions, fewer complications and quicker recovery times.
It means people get to go home and back to their loved ones sooner.
The surgeon-operated robot will be used for a wide-range of cancers including lung, oesophageal, stomach, bowel, liver, pancreas and kidney. It’s already making a difference, with the first operations successfully carried out.
