The Mayor of South Yorkshire Dan Jarvis has provided a welcome boost for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice after the Barnsley Central MP delivered a £1,100 cheque to the hospice.

Each year the Mayoral office donates the lost property money from South Yorkshire buses and interchanges to a local charity, and this year the Mayor has chosen Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.

During the visit the Mayor was given a tour of the hospice to see its vital work first-hand as well as discussing some of the issues faced by families caring for children with life-shortening and life-threatening conditions.

Samantha Wood, Head of Fundraising at Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, said:

“It was a pleasure  to welcome Dan Jarvis to the hospice and we’re incredibly grateful for this generous donation.

“As a charity we need to raise over £5.1m each year to keep our doors open for families from across South Yorkshire and beyond, and with only around 15 of this coming from Government sources, we’re very much reliant on our supporters in the community.

“So, it was very encouraging to hear that in his role as Mayor and Barnsley Central MP, Mr Jarvis supports our continued calls for fair and sustainable, long-term Government funding for children’s hospices.”

Mayor of South Yorkshire Dan Jarvis said:

“It was humbling to visit Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice to see the incredibly important work their team do, caring for seriously ill children from our region and supporting their families through heartbreaking circumstances.

“Each year we choose a charity to support through lost property money left unclaimed on buses and in interchanges across the region, and we are really proud this year to be helping Bluebell Wood towards their annual fundraising targets.”
