Student exhibition celebrates city

Students from Sheffield Hallam University's art and design courses have created a series of exhibits inspired by Sheffield's industrial heritage, for a new show at the MADE NORTH gallery.

30 students from the University's Sheffield Institute of Arts have organised and curated the exhibition, called This is Sheffield. The students are from a range of different design disciplines, including fashion, interior design, product design and furniture design. Richard Evans, senior lecturer in design, said: "The students have worked independently, with Patrick Murphy at MADE NORTH gallery, and have even designed the show's visual identity. It's really important that they get used to working in this way, because that's what they'll have to do when they become professional artists, designers and makers in their own right." Work on display includes screen-printed fabrics and clothing, a pestle and mortar made from cast iron, and a glass sweet jar. Some of the work is more abstract, but it was all inspired and informed by the city and its industrial heritage. This is Sheffield opens on Wednesday at the MADE NORTH gallery, Persistence Works, and runs until Saturday 21 February.
