Student Gets Work-Wise at Sheffield Engineering Company

5th March 2014

Lia Campbell, a year 10 student from Bradfield School, now has a much better idea of the skills and attributes she needs in the workplace, having spent a week on the work-wise programme at President Engineering Group (PEGL), based in Sheffield.

Work-wise is an employer inspired initiative run across the Sheffield City Region which supports the development of young people so they have the knowledge, skills, aptitude and opportunities to access employment. Lia is in her first year of the two year Cutler's Ambassador programme supported through work-wise, which involves both practical work placements, employability and skills development. The programme has also involved activities with other engineering and manufacturing companies designed to enhance her employability skills and awareness of different career opportunities within this sector. Marie Cooper, Finance Director of President Engineering Group said: -We are pleased to be involved with the work-wise programme as we believe it is really important to play a part in preparing young people for the world of work. We gave Lia the chance to spend time in many different departments of our business, so she can grasp how we take a project from design concept to end result. She is one of several students that have been on a placement with us and we look forward to welcoming more students in the future. Lia Campbell, Cutlers Ambassador, said: -The placement has given me an insight into working in an engineering business. I have been able to see the whole process from design to the finished product, and I loved finding out about all the functions of the different departments. I have a keen interest in design and I have been able to spend some time engineering my own 3D models. This experience has really boosted my confidence and will definitely benefit me in my chosen career in design. PEGL will be accepting more students into the business during the Easter break as part of the work-wise programme. John Barber, work-wise associate, said: -We are delighted that PEGL is continuing to use the work-wise programme. They are leading by example and showing that if employers support young people in preparing them for the world of work, this is not only good for the students, but great for businesses too.
