Donations still open: Support disadvantaged children who don’t thrive in a mainstream setting

2nd August 2023

Meynell Primary school are asking for business support to help them set up and establish a Forest School.

Who

Meynell Primary School is in Southey Ward the 5th most deprived in Sheffield. 68% of people in the ward are living in areas classed amongst the 10% most deprived in England. The staff are going above and beyond to support not only the children but the community that face a variety of challenges. 71% of students are in pupil premium and 32% of their kids have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). In many cases, the staff are having to support the children out of their own pockets to buy socks, pants, basic classroom resources and more. The level of need at this school means that many of their pupils don’t thrive in an academic classroom. Instead, they unlock their potential in a more ‘hands-on’ style of learning.

What

Meynell Primary School are asking for business support to help them set up and establish a Forest School. A Forest School is an educational experience in which children spend time in forests or other outdoor areas in order to learn how to make decisions, solve problems, take risks, etc. You can find out more here. The school is situated on 6 acres of land, and a woodland perfect for a Forest school. They are hoping that in a couple of years, all students will be able to access this facility.

How

In order to set up the forest school they need lots of equipment. We, therefore, ask that you share this information with all colleagues and disperse through your networks. They are hosting a drop-off session on the 13th of July for any second-hand equipment that businesses, employees or volunteers have to donate. The list of equipment is attached with a flyer which we ask you to print off and put up in your office. We suggest you create a collection point in your office! If you would like to donate but would not like to drop off items, the link to their Amazon wish list is here, again please share with your network here. All donated items will be sent directly to Meynell Primary School. Click on "Vikki Garretts Gift Registry Address".
