South Yorkshire International Trade Conference returns with expert insight on navigating a changing global economy
23rd September 2026
The South Yorkshire International Trade Conference (SYITC) returned in 2026 with a renewed format, a central new venue, and a sharper focus on helping businesses navigate the realities of global trade.
Brought with Headline Sponsor, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority and Associate Sponsor, Business Sheffield, this was the fourth annual SYITC, which has quickly established itself as a key event for businesses looking to grow internationally. Led by the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry through its Sheffield International Trade Centre and delivered in partnership with Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber and Doncaster Chamber, the conference continues to bring together the expertise and insight businesses need to trade with confidence.
Nick Patrick, Director of International Trade at Sheffield International Trade Centre, part of Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said:
“Businesses, particularly SMEs, are facing significant challenges in today’s economic climate. In the first half of 2026 alone, a wave of new and evolving regulations has come into force. At the same time, ongoing geopolitical tensions continue to disrupt global trade, driving increased protectionism and creating new barriers for businesses operating internationally.
“SYITC exists to confront these challenges head-on, bringing them into focus while offering practical solutions, support networks, and reassurance. And it’s about more than just responding to today’s challenges – the event also showcased a range of new initiatives to help businesses grow their international trade portfolios.”
South Yorkshire's Mayor Oliver Coppard said:
“South Yorkshire's future will be shaped by the qualities that have always defined us: innovation, ingenuity and a willingness to look outward.
“I was pleased to see so many people at the conference building new relationships, sharing ideas and exploring the opportunities in front of us. Those connections matter because when South Yorkshire businesses reach new markets and grow with confidence, the benefits don't stop at the factory gate or office door. They support jobs, skills and investment right across our communities.
“By working together and making the most of the opportunities ahead, we can help more businesses succeed, bring more investment into our region and create a stronger future for South Yorkshire.”
This year’s event took place at the Millennium Gallery on Tuesday 22nd September, and saw speakers, exhibitors, leading experts and delegates come together at the conference to explore the current state of international trade, identify opportunities for business in the region and share insights on how to overcome challenges.
Shane Young, Operations Director at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said:
“International trade continues to present huge opportunities for South Yorkshire businesses. This event is the ideal opportunity for businesses to stay informed, make valuable connections and discover new routes to international growth. From expert presentations on CBAM to practical advice on exporting and importing, the conference is designed to help businesses from across the region to succeed on the global stage.”
With international trade being reshaped by geopolitical tensions, evolving regulations, changing trading relationships and new market opportunities, businesses face an increasingly complex global landscape.
SYITC 2026 brought these issues into focus while providing practical insight businesses can use. With more than 180 delegates, the conference explored a wide range of topics including the British Chambers of Commerce Global Business Network, South Yorkshire’s international trade ambitions, the Gulf and GCC markets, CBAM, Hong Kong and Asian markets, the UK-India Free Trade Agreement, the impact of geopolitics on global trade, and the success stories behind the King’s Awards for Enterprise.
