Taylor&Emmet LLP is marking Empty Homes Week (February 15-21) by offering free training to the public sector, via a virtual platform.

The sessions are being provided by the firm’s specialist inheritance tracing and empty homes team, which helps organisations address legal issues arising from empty homes.

Taylor&Emmet’s experts will highlight the legal options available to empty homes practitioners and professionals, when faced with deceased, missing or incapacitated property owners.

Ben Brown, who heads up Taylor&Emmet’s inheritance tracing and empty homes team, said: “England alone needs more than 300,000 new homes each year and vacant premises can help authorities meet their obligations. We want to show public sector practitioners how to utilise the law to ensure properties are not left to decay and become a blight on communities, by giving them a new lease of life.”

Taylor&Emmet launched its inheritance tracing and empty homes department in 2018 and it has grown rapidly, receiving regular instructions from leading genealogists, charities and local councils nationally. The team facilitates empty homes being put back into use, by addressing a myriad of issues, including investigating property titles, tracing the next of kin of deceased owners and making Court of Protection applications.

To meet growing demand for its services, Taylor&Emmet has recently recruited solicitor, Gabriel Swales, to deal with a variety of legal issues relating to empty homes. Lucy Carrick, who embarked on a training contract with the firm in September, is currently part of the team and will join it on a permanent basis when she qualifies as a solicitor next year.
