Team Hallam takes home seven medals at Commonwealth Games

Seven medals were won by Sheffield Hallam University students and alumni competing in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Hallam’s athletes won three silver and four bronze medals across five sports, including:  

• Kate O’Connor, representing Team Northern Ireland in heptathlon, won a silver medal
• Lewis Richardson, representing Team England in boxing (middleweight), won a bronze medal
• Jade O’Dowda, representing Team England in heptathlon, won a bronze medal
• Joe Litchfield (alumnus), representing Team England in swimming (400IM), won a silver medal
• Adam Hague (alumnus), representing Team England in pole vault, won a silver medal
• Charlotte Moore (alumna), representing Team England in wheelchair basketball, won a bronze medal
• Brendan Creed, Liam Ansell, Phil Roper and David Goodfield (alumnus), all representing Team England in hockey, won a bronze medal

Kate O’Connor, student in sport development with coaching at Sheffield Hallam University, said:

“It is crazy - all the hard work has finally paid off and it was probably one of the best nights of my life. I am so proud of myself and my team for making this happen. I have got the European Championships coming up, but I am just trying to enjoy this moment. Although I feel like I'll go on and win more medals and have more success you just never know what's going to happen in the future." 

Jordan Butler, sport development performance co-ordinator at Sheffield Hallam University, said:

“We are really proud of the achievements of our students and alumni at this year's Commonwealth Games. It has been fantastic to see so many of them representing the home nations and flying the Team Hallam flag on a global scale. The medals won are a great testament to our athletes’ hard work and determination.  

“Their achievements also show the University’s dedication to supporting elite athletes with their dual careers and helping them to reach their sporting goals. We are looking forward to seeing what they will achieve next.”  

The medals at the Commonwealth Games follow Team Hallam’s success at the European University Games, where the men’s climbing team took home three gold, three silver and one bronze medal.  

The student athletes are part of Sheffield Hallam’s Performance Athlete Support Programme, which provides up to £3,000 of support to allow talented students to balance university life whilst achieving their sporting potential.
