The Great SRSB Bake Off

17th June 2014

They may literally be 'baking blind', but Lord Mayor discovers these SRSB ladies could beat the Bake Off stars! Cllr Vickie Priestly, The Lord Mayor of Sheffield recently joined clients at The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB), one of Mercury Taxis three charities of the year, for their weekly baking class.

The class takes place every week at the Mappin Street Centre. Clients have the opportunity to try the specialist equipment in the centres demonstration kitchen and swap ideas whilst having fun. The Lord Mayor used to teach cake decorating at night school and was really interested in how the group managed to do baking when they struggled to see. That week they were baking lemon drizzle cakes. The Lord Mayor helped to weigh the ingredients for the cakes using the talking weighing scales wearing a blindfold and simm specs. She said -this is so difficult and she couldn't understand why when women do most of the cooking the weighing scales had a man's voice! Client Ivy was on hand to make sure she weighed the right amount. -We are delighted to say that the cakes turned out to perfection. The smell in the centre was amazing says Sue Coggin, SRSB. -Clients love to do the baking it is such a confidence boost and the results are so tasty. One of the bakers, Norma, loves Wednesdays because her grandson always calls in on his way home from school to sample her cakes. How lovely.
