The Yorkshire Crisp Company Looks Ahead to a Positive New Year

15th October 2020

Sheffield-based artisan crisp producer, The Yorkshire Crisp Company, is looking towards a positive year ahead and despite the last eight roller-coaster months of 2020, is riding the COVID-19 storm with plans in place for an exciting 2021.

Said Tim Wheatley of The Yorkshire Crisp Company: “The hospitality and entertainment sectors have declined but we have had an increase in sales in other areas and business is buoyant.”

“We have seen a trend in increased support for locally produced goods with many small independent retailers starting delivery services in their local areas.”

To complement this, the company is looking to further improve the brand following the introduction of new packaging last year for its single 40g bags of Yorkshire Crisps which has now been extended to their 150g large sharing bags, with final new designs for the Cheddar & Caramelised Onion Chutney, and the Sweet Chilli & Lime flavours rolling out this month.

As well as their iconic 100g drums of hand-cooked Yorkshire Crisps, boxes of 24 single 40g bags are now available to purchase online from the business’ own website shop and are available in single flavours and also a recent new addition - a mixed box of ‘Yorkshire Favourites’ offering six bags each of the four most popular flavours in one box – Natural Sea Salt, Chardonnay Wine Vinegar, Worcester Sauce and Cheddar & Caramelised Onion Chutney.

The large bag of Natural Sea Salt flavour Yorkshire Crisps for caterers is now being produced in a 600g plastic bucket-style tub which is fully recyclable,  to offer greater protection for the product and easier storage.

The company also produces gourmet Yorkshire Popcorn in three traditional-style flavours and a luxury toffee-coated variety. All four drums of Yorkshire Popcorn have had their packaging re-designed to feature fun-style, eye-catching images with connections to the leisure industry and linked to the county of Yorkshire.  The Luxury Toffee flavour features a brass model of the iconic Stephenson’s Rocket steam engine highlighting the National Railway Museum at York.  Similar images adorn the traditional-style range with a yellow cycle representing Yorkshire’s sporting heritage, with the county’s great cycle race on the Salted flavour; a colourful hot-air balloon on the Sweet flavour to represent the ballooning fiesta in the county’s capital; and a galloping carousel horse on the Salt & Sweet flavour to represent Hull Fair and the many historic attractions that travelled around Yorkshire.

But these deliciously moreish products aren’t just popular in God’s Own County. Export sales have increased with Yorkshire Crisps also being enjoyed in Germany, Denmark, Russia, Lithuania, Sweden and Malta and the company now employs a team of 20 staff.

Sales to hamper companies have also continued to be strong, with several new hamper start-ups and subscription box companies setting up. The drums are proving to be a perfect choice for these as they look great, protect the product and have a great shelf-life.

Said Tim: “We are very pleased that business is continuing to progress for us and we are in a strong position for 2021. We have some inspiring plans in place including brand new drum packaging and the development of an exciting new premium flavour, so watch this space!”
