Think, Check and Travel Safe During the Festive Season in Sheffield

10th December 2020

This Christmas may look a little different for everyone, but Sheffield’s buses, trams and trains are here for those people who need to use public transport during the festive season.

South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive (SYPTE) is reminding customers to plan ahead for local journeys this Christmas, by checking timetables and services at travelsouthyorkshire.com/christmas.

Most local buses will follow Saturday timetables between Monday 21 December 2020 and Friday 1 January 2021, with an early finish on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Tram and tram train services will generally run a Saturday timetable between Thursday 24 December and Friday 1 January. Train users should plan ahead and check their service with National Rail Enquiries during this period.

There will be no services running on Christmas Day and reduced services on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Usual services will resume on Saturday 2 January 2021.

SYPTE’s Director of Customer Services Tim Taylor says: “Given the local Covid Tier restrictions this year, it is more important than ever that customers think and check before travelling, as journeys may be busier and take longer than usual over the Christmas period.

“If you need to travel on public transport, plan ahead carefully and consider quieter routes or times for your journey. Don’t forget to wear a face covering - unless you’re exempt, keep your distance and wash or sanitise your hands regularly before and after travelling. This will help us all to travel safely this Christmas.”

Opening hours for Travel South Yorkshire Interchanges and Park and Ride sites during the festive period are available at www.travelsouthyorkshire.com/christmas. To make it easier for people who need to go into town or make an essential journey on the tram, SYPTE and Stagecoach Supertram are offering free parking at Nunnery Square park and ride from Friday 11 December 2020 to Sunday 3 January 2021. All customers will have to do is buy a ticket to travel on board the tram.

Traveline will operate to revised hours (8am to 6pm) from Thursday 24 December 2020 to Sunday 3 January 2021 and be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Customers will be able to plan their journey using the Travel South Yorkshire journey planner from Friday 11 December. Live travel information will be available via Twitter @TSYalerts or Traveline on 01709 51 51 51, except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Concessions

As in previous years, the 9:30 travel restriction will be removed for senior concessionary pass holders between Saturday 26 December 2020 and Sunday 3 January 2021 inclusive.  During this period, holders of English National Concessionary Travel Scheme (ENCTS) Senior Passes can travel for free on buses and trams, and for half fare on Northern Rail services within South Yorkshire at any time of day
