Two national award nominations for Sheffield leisure charity

1st October 2015

The charity which runs Sheffield's sport and leisure centres has been shortlisted for two national awards.

Sheffield City Trust (SCT) has been nominated in the Best Rehabilitation Facility of the Year and Group Exercise Gym of the Year categories at the 2015 National Fitness Awards. SCT's Hillsborough Leisure Centre was selected as a finalist in the Group Exercise Gym of the Year category. Hillsborough offers over 100 fitness classes for members each week from 6.20am to 9.30pm with more than 20 different types of class for all ages and abilities from BODYATTACK to Silver Circuits. Concord Sports Centre, home to SCT's GP Exercise Referral Scheme, has been shortlisted within the Best Rehabilitation Facility of the Year category. The hugely successful scheme, celebrating its 10th birthday this year, has helped transform the lives of thousands of local residents with coronary heart disease, muscular skeletal diseases and respiratory illnesses. Concord is also home to the country's first National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine (NCSEM), which opened earlier this month and recognises the successful GP referral work delivered at the venue over the last 10 years. The NCSEM at Concord brings together NHS clinical services, sport and exercise specialists and health professionals to make it easier for physical activity to become part of the treatment for a range of chronic health conditions. The National Fitness Awards recognise achievements and excellence in all corners of the fitness industry. SCT's charitable objective is to improve the health and wellbeing of Sheffield people by providing facilities for sport and leisure activities. Steve Brailey, chief executive of SCT, said: -We're extremely proud to receive this recognition celebrating the success of our gyms and programmes in improving the health and wellbeing of people across Sheffield. -From the very latest fitness classes and trends for our Fitness Unlimited members to schemes which are transforming the lives of people with chronic health conditions, these nominations show that our charity is leading the way nationally. The sixth annual National Fitness Awards will take place on Friday 14 December at the Athena in Leicester. For more information visit www.sivltd.com.
