University announces new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Science

The University of Sheffield is delighted to announce a new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Science.

Professor Nigel Clarke, who is currently Head of the Department of Physics and Astronomy and a Professor of Condensed Matter Theory, will take up his new role in June 2016. Professor Clarke previously worked at Durham, Leeds, Manchester and Southampton universities and has an excellent track record in supporting growth and developing international collaborations with associated funding. His experience spans a number of disciplines including physics, mathematics, material sciences and chemistry. The role is a prestigious honour for Professor Clarke who is an alumnus of the University having gained his first degree and PhD in Sheffield. Professor Clarke said: "I am thrilled at being given this opportunity to lead the Faculty of Science, which has one of the largest Science student populations in the UK and an impressive range of research interests from pure mathematics to social, health and environmental psychology. "It is clear to me that what we have in common is a love of science and a passion for scientific discovery. I am looking forward to building on this shared identity, enabling colleagues from across all our departments to inspire and learn from each other. -In this way we will continue the growth of our international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research as a faculty, doing our part for the success of the University of Sheffield." Professor Clarke will take over from Professor Tony Ryan OBE who is also Director of the Grantham Centre for Sustainable Futures. Professor Sir Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said: -I would like to extend my thanks once again to our outgoing Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Tony Ryan OBE who has been such a powerful advocate for Science, and who will continue to lead a number of international partnerships and cross-cutting research on sustainability.
