University of Sheffield Appoints New Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching

Professor Wyn Morgan to become Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching He will take the lead for ensuring excellence and innovation in teaching and learning for 26,000 students including undergraduates, postgraduates, overseas student and those studying for University of Sheffield qualifications overseas He will also oversee the University of Sheffield's commitment to broad participation, including outreach and access to schools and new forms of advanced vocational and technical education Professor Morgan is currently Assistant Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning and a Professor in Economics at the University of Nottingham The University of Sheffield is pleased to announce the appointment of its new Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching, Professor Wyn Morgan.

Professor Morgan will lead the University's commitment to excellence and innovation in its teaching of 26,000 students, ranging from undergraduate and postgraduate students, to students studying for PhDs, students based overseas in locations such as at City College in Thessaloniki, and for the University of Sheffield's broad programme of outreach, access and widening participation - including its commitments to new routes for advanced vocational and technical education. He will also be a member of the University's Executive Board. Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett said: "I am delighted to welcome Professor Morgan to join an outstanding academic leadership team at the University of Sheffield. Professor Morgan has shown exceptional commitment to the quality of learning and teaching throughout his career, and in particular has a reputation for working closely with students - an approach which is central to us here in Sheffield as we ensure students are fully prepared for life after graduation. "Professor Morgan has also led a long-term programme of learning and teaching development across faculties, and has served as Director of e-Learning. He recognises the wonderful strengths which already exist in Sheffield, and I know he will bring vision and commitment to help develop and shape this area in the years to come." Professor Morgan's research interests focus on the economics of global food prices, and his teaching on microeconomics and commodity futures markets. He has served as Associate Director of the HEA's Economics Network and the University of Nottingham's Centre for Excellence for Integrative Learning. Professor Morgan also gained one of the first Lord Dearing Awards for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in 1999, and in 2014 he was named one of Nottingham University Students' Union's '100 Heroes' and was short-listed for Best All-Rounder in the Students' Union Oscars. He also received a commendation for the -Student Nominated Teaching Award from the Higher Education Academy's Economics Network, in 2007. Professor Morgan said: -I am absolutely delighted to be appointed to lead this vital area at the University of Sheffield. Teaching has always played a central role in my career, and both in my own discipline and in more strategic teaching and learning roles I have sought to understand what really works for students, and to learn more about the best ideas from other universities nationally and internationally. "Sheffield has a well-deserved international reputation for teaching and the quality of its graduates and I am looking forward to playing my own part in ensuring that it goes from strength to strength, helping students to have the most fulfilling educational experience which will genuinely prepare them for whatever career or life choices they then pursue." Professor Morgan will take up the role of Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Learning and Teaching at The University of Sheffield from September 2015.
