The University of Sheffield has been ranked among the top in the UK within The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024.

The annual league table places Sheffield 3rd in 'The North and North East' and 18th best university in the UK, up two places from the previous year, with over 85 per cent University of Sheffield graduates going into graduate-level employment or further study.

The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 provides the definitive rankings for UK universities and the most comprehensive overview of higher education in Britain. It includes profiles on 134 universities, making use of the latest data.

The guide provides prospective students and their families with information to make an informed choice about their higher education, evaluating everything from satisfaction with teaching quality and the student experience through to degree completion rates and graduate employment prospects.

Professor Koen Lamberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, said: "Providing our students with an outstanding student experience is incredibly important to us at Sheffield and I am pleased that the University has been recognised for its world-class learning and teaching offer.

“Sheffield students have access to internships and placements with globally-recognised employers as part of their studies and our teaching ensures they are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a competitive job market.

"I am proud of the difference our students go on to make when they embark upon their careers and we will continue to provide students with the leading educational experience Sheffield is known for."

Earlier this week, the University was ranked joint 21st overall out of 122 universities in The Guardian University Guide 2024, rising from 30th place the previous year. The Guardian guide also ranked the University in the top 10 for the following subject areas: aerospace engineering (4th); architecture (7th); construction, surveying and planning (2nd); criminology (7th); electrical and electronic engineering (3rd); general engineering (8th); general nursing (4th); geography (9th); international relations (8th); journalism (5th); mechanical engineering (4th); music (6th) and zoology (7th).

In the same week, the University was also awarded University of the Year for Student Experience by the Daily Mail University Guide 2024, in recognition of the University’s National Student Survey (NSS) results, swift shift back to in-person teaching following the Covid-19 pandemic and social inclusion work.

The University was ranked 11th overall in the UK within the Daily Mail rankings and performed highly for its work to support students who are the first in their family to go to university.

The news comes just weeks after the University of Sheffield’s NSS results placed Sheffield top across the Russell Group of universities for assessment and feedback and its Students’ Union, and in the top three for learning opportunities, student voice and mental health. The University also received the highest positive responses to the survey, which asked students to give feedback on their higher education experience.

Earlier this year, the University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union was voted the Whatuni Student Choice Award 2023 for Best Students' Union, for the sixth year in a row, while the University was also nominated for the University of the Year and Student Life categories.
