University of Sheffield strengthens top 100 global standing with 10-place rise in QS World Rankings

The University of Sheffield has risen 10 places in the QS World University Rankings 2027 to be ranked 82nd in the world and 14th in the UK, reinforcing its position as a world-leading university.

The University of Sheffield has risen 10 places in the QS World University Rankings 2027 to be ranked 82nd in the world and 14th in the UK, reinforcing its position as a world-leading university.

The QS World University Rankings are among the most widely recognised independent assessments of higher education institutions globally. This year’s rankings evaluated more than 1,500 universities worldwide, assessing performance across indicators including academic reputation, research impact and citations, employer reputation and outcomes, student experience, sustainability, and levels of international staff, students and research collaboration.

This latest rise in the rankings further consolidates the University’s established position among the world’s elite institutions. It reflects the collective efforts of staff, students and alumni in building the University’s reputation and impact around the world. 

President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sheffield, Professor Koen Lamberts, said: “We are incredibly proud that the University has risen ten places in this year’s QS World University Rankings and has been recognised again as one of the top universities in the world.

“This achievement reflects the dedication, talent and hard work of our University community and our continued commitment to delivering world-class research, outstanding teaching and an exceptional experience for our students.

“At Sheffield, we are driven by the belief that universities have a vital role to play in tackling global challenges and creating positive change through education, innovation and collaboration. This recognition demonstrates the impact of that work here in Sheffield and around the world.”

More than 21 million academic publications and 222 million citations were examined to measure the impact of the research produced by the ranked universities. In addition, 1.6 million academic nominations and 600,000 employer nominations contributed to this year’s rankings.

The University’s highest scores came in the internationalisation indicators, with 98 out of 100 for international students and diversity, as well as 98 out of 100 for international research network.

The accolade follows strong performances in national and international league tables recognising the University's student experience, research excellence and international outlook and cementing Sheffield’s position as a global leader. 

Earlier this year, the University of Sheffield was named among the top 50 most international universities in the world for 2026 by Times Higher Education, reflecting the strength of its global research collaborations and diverse international community. 

In the past year, the University of Sheffield was also ranked top of the Russell Group for the second year in a row in the National Student Survey (NSS), with Sheffield’s Students’ Union voted as the best in the UK.

The University has also been ranked 13th in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2027, The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026 and the Daily Mail University Guide 2026.
