The University of Sheffield has been voted the University of the Year at the Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) 2024.

The awards, which are the largest annual university awards in the UK voted for exclusively by students, were a multiple celebration for the University, which also won Best Students’ Union for the seventh year running and the award for Best Student Life.

The University of Sheffield was also shortlisted in the Facilities, Student Support and International categories.

Professor Mary Vincent, Vice-President for Education at the University of Sheffield, said: “We are absolutely thrilled to be named University of the Year by the Whatuni Student Choice Awards 2024. This recognition is a reflection of the tireless efforts of our entire University community – our dedicated and supportive staff, and of course, our incredible students.

"Winning the Best Students’ Union for the seventh year in a row is also a truly remarkable achievement which recognises the vibrant environment, outstanding support services, and plethora of opportunities our Students’ Union provides, allowing our students to thrive both academically and personally.

“Both of these accolades, coupled with the award for Best Student Life, underscores our commitment to providing a world-class learning and teaching environment that fosters academic excellence, personal growth, and a vibrant student life. We are incredibly proud to offer an experience that our students value so highly.”

Located at the heart of the University campus, the University of Sheffield’s Students’ Union is central to the student experience. Home to over 350 student-led societies, it also offers venues for live entertainment and club nights, places to eat, drink, shop, study and socialise, a nursery, and a 400-seat cinema. It provides a hub where students from across the world can come together to try new activities, make friends and access advice and support.

As well as offering social activities and advice, the Students’ Union is home to a wealth of committees aimed at supporting specific student groups, including LGBT+, BAME, disabled and international students, whilst also providing a supportive environment for students who want to campaign on issues important to them. The award-winning Student Advice Centre is based at the Students’ Union, which offers information and advice to students.

Made up of around 35,000 university reviews, the Whatuni Student Choice Awards are the only annual university accolades based on student views. The awards aim to celebrate the commitment and hard work of higher education providers across the UK in creating the best environment for their students.

Lily Byrne, President of the University of Sheffield's Students' Union, said: “Thank you so much to all of our students who chose to get involved and review us. As a Students’ Union, we strive to ensure that our students feel represented, empowered, and have the best possible time at University. Every year we provide thousands of opportunities for students to positively shape their future and have fun. It’s wonderful to read the reviews in this year’s awards and understand just how important these opportunities are to our student community.”

The University of Sheffield's nominations for the Facilities, Student Support and International categories at the awards is a direct result of glowing student reviews praising the University's exceptional teaching quality, outstanding support services, provision for international students and cutting-edge facilities.
