University recognised as top employer for workplace equality

The University of Sheffield has been named as a top employer for workplace equality for a third year in a row by the leading LGBT charity Stonewall.
In recognition of its continued dedication to workplace equality, the University has been ranked in the Stonewall Top 100 Employers list a definitive list showcasing the best employers for lesbian, gay, bi and trans staff. The Stonewall Top 100 Employers are the best performing employers on the charity's Workplace Equality Index an annual audit of workplace culture for LGBT staff. The index is becoming increasingly competitive with more than 400 employers submitting entries this year, the highest number since it first opened in 2005. The University aims to support people, regardless of their sexual orientation or any other equality characteristic, to work together to create and be part of an all-encompassing community. Working with Stonewall, the University uses the index as a way to measure its efforts to tackle discrimination and create an inclusive workplace for lesbian, gay, bi and trans employees. This year, the charity received 60,506 responses overall, making it one the largest national employment surveys in Britain. Sheffield will now use the results of the survey to help continue its focus on LGBT equality. Andrew Dodman, Director of Human Resources at the University of Sheffield, said: -I'm delighted that we have once again been named a Top 100 Employer by Stonewall. To be ranked in the top 100 for three years running is testimony to our ongoing and sustained commitment to equality and diversity. -We are always striving to create a remarkable place to work, and we do that by working in partnership with our staff and other stakeholders to promote and embed inclusivity in everything we do. I'm very proud of our work in this area, and LGBT equality will continue to be a focus within our wider equality agenda. In order to build on this recognition from Stonewall, the University together with its LGBT Staff Network are launching 'Open@TUoS' - a new initiative inviting all staff to become allies of LGBT staff and students. The scheme is encouraging staff to show their support of LGBT colleagues by wearing rainbow lanyards, challenging inappropriate language or behaviour, attending LGBT-related events and sharing their learning with others. Ruth Hunt, Chief Executive of Stonewall added: -The University of Sheffield and all of those employers that secured a place in the Stonewall Top 100 Employers 2016 list performed fantastically this year. We have had more submissions than ever before and so making the list is a huge achievement. I'd like to thank all of those organisations for their continued efforts to ensure that their lesbian, gay, bi and trans staff feel comfortable to bring their whole selves to work and are accepted without exception.
