UTC Sheffield Assistant Principal Appointed

A new Assistant Principal has been appointed to lead on the creative and digital media curriculum at the University Technical College (UTC) Sheffield.
Brigidin Crowther, a creative industries specialist as well as an experienced teacher, will start her new post this September when the UTC Sheffield opens. The brand new £9.9 million facility on Shoreham Street is the first of its kind in Yorkshire and will be fitted with £1 million of specialist equipment including high tech design and sound studios, engineering mini factories and a rooftop multi sports pitch. The UTC Sheffield, for 14 to 19-year-olds, will specialise in academic and technical qualifications for the creative and digital media, and advanced engineering and manufacturing industries. GCSEs and A-levels will be offered alongside specialist vocational diploma courses. Applications for Year 10 places at UTC Sheffield are still being accepted. My role will involve developing professional opportunities and real industry projects for our students to work with web designers, gamers, photographers, animators, filmmakers, technology specialists and entrepreneurs. The UTC will provide a fantastic talent stream into this important creative sector which supports other businesses such as advanced engineering and manufacturing. Brigidin is an accomplished filmmaker and educator with a strong international business background. After ten years as an advisory teacher in Bedfordshire, Brigidin worked as a BBC presenter and producer and also spent seven years internationally directing films for technology bluechip companies specialising in stories about technology transforming lives. This included being sent around the world from Tokyo to the Silicon Valley working on the Human Genome story about the race for the sequencing of the human gene. Brigidin was Project Director of the Developing Creativity project for the CIQA from 2001 to 2004 finding opportunities for over 200 young people from the most disadvantaged areas of Sheffield to access the creative and digital industries. She is currently Head of Creativity at Sero Consulting in Sheffield where she leads on multimedia and education strategy. Brigidin has a first degree in English as well as a Masters in International Cinema from the University of Sheffield. The UTC is sponsored by The Sheffield College with Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and Industry as co-sponsors. The UTC Sheffield is funded by the Department for Education, has been designed by HLM Architects and is being built by Wates Construction. Sheffield City Council is providing the land on a 125-year lease at a peppercorn rent.
