UTC Sheffield Public Consultation and Open Event

Young people and their parents are invited to take part in a public consultation as part of a UTC Sheffield open event this week.
Visitors will meet the Principals and teachers, and take part in tours of the multi-million pound facilities at UTC Sheffield City Centre campus on Matilda Street which is Ofsted graded 'good'. There will be hands-on activities during the event on Wednesday, June 14th, and the chance to speak to employers including Siemens, Rolls-Royce, Hugh Mann Adamson and Breedon. Nick Crew, Executive Principal, UTC Sheffield, said: -UTCs provide young people with strong career prospects because they train in the technical skills that employers need in addition to achieving academic qualifications We have enjoyed great success in Sheffield and look forward to welcoming parents and young people. There is a briefing session from 5.00pm to 6.00pm regarding the UTC's proposals to lower the student recruitment age. An open evening is also running at the same time from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome to attend both the public consultation briefing from Nick Crew and the open evening. UTC Sheffield City Centre campus specialises in engineering and manufacturing, and creative and digital. Students currently join the UTC at the age of 14 in Year 10 or at the age of 16 in Year 12. They study technical and academic qualifications including GCSEs and A Levels. Young people, parents, employers, and the public, are being encouraged to have their say on new proposals which would see younger students being able to join the UTC in Year 9 at the age of 13 from September 2018. Sheffield is the only city outside of London that currently has two UTCs. Together, as UTC Sheffield, they offer five specialisms at two campuses and equip young people with the technical skills that employers need. UTC Sheffield City Centre campus, on Matilda Street, opened in September 2013 and was the first UTC in Yorkshire and the Humber. UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park campus, on Old Hall Road, Attercliffe Common, specialises in computing, health sciences and sport science, and opened in September 2016. UTC Sheffield is sponsored by The Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Chamber of Commerce and is supported by around 50 employers who have helped to design the buildings and curriculum, and provide mentoring, course projects and work experience.
