UTC Sheffield Showcase Event

11th November 2013

The newly opened £9.

9 million University Technical College (UTC) Sheffield is hosting a showcase event next week for parents and young people to find out more about courses and careers in engineering, technology and the creative industries beginning next year. The UTC Sheffield, for 14 to 19-year-olds, is the first institution of its kind to open in Yorkshire and the Humber this September. There are currently more than 200 students based at UTC Sheffield, with capacity longer term for a maximum of 600 students. Students complete GCSEs and A-levels alongside specialist technical courses. The curriculum has input from more than 40 employers and provides traditional academic and technical qualifications tailored to two specific sectors where there are skills gaps regionally: advanced engineering and manufacturing, and creative and digital media. The free showcase event takes place on Tuesday, November 12th, from 6pm to 8pm at the UTC Sheffield, Matilda Street, Sheffield city centre. Places have been increased due to demand. To book a place now go to www.utcsheffield.org.uk/events. Parents and young people will have a chance to meet the UTC Sheffield Principal, tour the new facilities, talk to employers involved in the curriculum and find out about the work-related projects, get involved in hands-on activities, discover the opportunities to study, train and gain employment in the advanced engineering, and creative and digital media sectors, and the options to gain work or go onto university afterwards. Nick Crew, UTC Sheffield Principal, said: "The UTC Sheffield is a brand new and exciting choice for young people in Sheffield City Region providing a well rounded education offering traditional academic and technical qualifications in specialist skills that help young people secure their future whether that's going into the workplace or onto university. I look forward to welcoming parents and young people, and answering any questions they may have." UTC Sheffield is fitted with £1 million of specialist equipment including engineering mini factories, high tech design and sound studios, and a rooftop sports pitch. Applications for September 2014 are now being accepted. For more information go to www.utcsheffield.org.uk or call 0114 2603970. You can also follow us on Twitter @utcsheffield.
