We are rolling out smart water meters

16th March 2026

We are upgrading 1.4 million water meters at our customers homes and business premises across Yorkshire over the next few years to a smart water meter.

So far, we have upgraded almost 150k meters across Yorkshire and smart meters are already making a big difference – helping customers save money, helping Yorkshire Water find and fix leaks faster, and helping us all to save water.  Our partner M Group are carrying the works out on our behalf and are currently working in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Wakefield.

Smart meters accurately measure how much water a customer uses at their property/premises sending regular readings that give customers almost real time visibility of their water consumption.

The meter exchange is really fast and straightforward.  If a customer's meter is inside we will be in touch to make their appointment.  If the meter is outside and we have access, we can normally exchange it there and then without an appointment.  It takes around 20 minutes to switch and we will leave the area as we found it.
