Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day raises more than £33,000 towards cancer treatment enhancement, research and support services

12th August 2022

Supporters of Weston Park Cancer Charity got into the swing of things to raise more than £33,000 to help improve cancer treatment experiences at the charity’s annual golf day.

A total of £33,570 was raised at the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, sponsored by Special Steel Group – funds which will contribute to improving the lives of anyone affected by cancer in Sheffield and surrounding regions.

The event, held at Hallamshire Golf Club in Sheffield, saw entries from more than 30 businesses comprising of 43 teams, with a team from Palmer Construction posting the winning score.

Generous sponsorship and backing from organisations and individuals helped raise vital funds for Weston Park Cancer Charity, as did generous donations, competition entries, auctions and raffle tickets purchased by players on the day.

In attendance for the first time in three years due to the pandemic was charity patron John Price; John defied a terminal cancer diagnosis to see his sons through their education, qualify in their respective professionals, get married and have children – after taking part in a clinical trial funded by Weston Park Cancer Charity which ultimately extended his life greatly.

In response, John originally set-up a golf day years ago to raise £100,000 for Weston Park – to pay back the cost of the clinical trial he took part in. John’s golf day eventually became the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day, continuing a legacy which has seen him raise more than £350,000 for Weston Park Cancer Charity to date.

Alan Beardshaw, of main event sponsor Special Steel Group, said: “We’re thrilled at how much the Weston Park Cancer Charity Golf Day raised; both the charity and the hospital do so much wonderful work for people of our region.

“One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetimes, making Weston Park Cancer Charity’s work highly relevant to everyone. It is our privilege to support such a brilliant cause.”

James Glover, General Manager at Hallamshire Golf Club, said: “It was amazing to support Weston Park Cancer Charity again with their golf day.

“Supporting charities is such an important thing that we do, and we’ve had a great relationship with Weston Park Cancer Charity for a long time now. It was fantastic to see the golfers enjoying a full day out on the course and raising money for such a great cause.

“It’s been wonderful to work with the team at the charity to produce such a great event – we can’t wait for next year already!”

Darren Hayes, Head of Fundraising at Weston Park Cancer Charity, said: “We’d like to thank everybody who made our 2022 Golf Day so special. It is always a brilliant day and a wonderful way to showcase the work of Weston Park Cancer Charity.

“We’re immensely grateful for the contributions of everybody involved in making it such a success – including everybody who took part, sponsored or donated on the day. By doing so, you have helped change the lives of people living with cancer across our region.

“I’d also like to thank our staff and volunteers for making the event possible. After a challenging period for events due to the pandemic, it’s been fantastic to have volunteers back supporting us recently.

“Events play a huge part in helping us support the one in two people facing cancer, so naturally it’s been a huge boost to have them back in recent months. There will be plenty more opportunities to contribute to our work in the coming weeks and months; keep tabs on our website and social media channels for more information!”
