Wheelchair Sports Charity Benefits from Westfield Health Donation

9th October 2014

Sheffield's largest disabled sports club has benefited from a £12,500 donation from Westfield Health.

The Sheffield Wheelchair Sports Club, which provides access to sports and fitness for young people and adults with physical disabilities, has used funds to improve its facilities. Located at the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Unit at the Northern General Hospital, the club has refurbished its snooker and pool room, as well as the fitness room, with work including redecorating, new flooring and replacement lighting fixtures. The charity was formed in 1957 and the sports club now has more than 150 members, who have access to sports including wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, table tennis, bowls, archery and snooker. Patients from the spinal injuries unit benefit from using the centre's facilities as part of their rehabilitation programme, with the club's members working with newly injured patients to encourage them to get into sport to aid their recovery. John Robinson, Secretary of the Sheffield Wheelchair Sports Club, said: -We are extremely grateful to Westfield Health for this generous donation. We rely heavily on donations of this nature, so to receive such a fantastic amount from them is a real help. -We relocated to the Northern General from Lodge Moor Hospital in 1994 and the centre hasn't undergone any refurbishment since, so it's fantastic to be able to give it a new lease of life. -It will ensure that our members and patients from the hospital's spinal unit can get the most out of the improved facilities both during and after their recovery. Graham Moore, Chairman of Westfield Health, said: -We're so pleased to be able to support the Sheffield Wheelchair Sports Club. The charity provides such excellent facilities for both the spinal injury unit patients and the club's members, so it's great to see that our donation has made such a difference to them."
