When it comes to crime, prevention is better than cure

13th February 2013

In the recently published national crime survey it shows total reported crime in the UK has shown a welcome year on year decrease.

The saying that there are three kinds of lies; lies, damn lies and statistics may well ring true with business owners who are seeing increases in crime against their companies.  The insurance companies, who often end up having to pay-out for crime against business, tell a very different story. A 2012 survey produced by AXA Insurance report a 16% increase in crimes against business, with theft accounting for 74% of all incidents. They have also identified an increase in the average value of each theft, suggesting that a more 'determined' than 'opportunist' thief is emerging during these increasingly difficult financial times. The survey also highlights Halifax as the area with the highest levels of reported crime against business after a big year on year increase. AXA are urging businesses to look at what they can to reduce the risk of becoming a victim as a big loss can be devastating for a business in both financial and emotional terms. Some companies turn to manned guarding to protect their premises, although for many this option is regarded as being too expensive. Nearly 30 years ago AlertSystems recognised the need for a sophisticated automated deterrent system to protect premises. They developed the first External Deterrent System (EDS), specifically designed to help protect the external areas of sites, as well as deterring intruders from getting close to compounds and buildings. It has proven to be highly effective in providing an effective deterrent against theft and vandalism, while protecting vulnerable stock left outside premises. The EDS is simple to operate and being an automatic system with separate activation phases, can bere-set without the need for key-holders to attend, although they can be notified by means of an SMS text message or email. The AlertSystems EDS has been tried and tested in over 5000 installations nationwide and can be further enhanced by integration with other security systems such as CCTV,Intruder Alarms and remote Monitoring to provide a comprehensive security solution.
