Wholesaler’s care bundles a vital lifeline to Sheffield older persons charity

23rd June 2020

Dozens of isolated older people leaving hospital will benefit from care packs donated by a generous Sheffield wholesaler.

The vital bundles, comprising everyday essentials from food to toiletries, were donated to Sheffield Churches Council for Community Care (SCCCC) by Pricecheck.

The Beighton-based business hopes its 50 packs will help service users of the charity’s Hospital to Home scheme, which supports the NHS and health professionals to transport older people home upon discharge.

Mark Storey, CEO at SCCCC, said:

“Our ‘Hospital to Home’ service provides a fast support response to older people who’ve been discharged from hospital. Key to its success is giving isolated people with no other means of support the peace of mind that they have some basic items like food and toiletries there when they get home. This extremely generous donation helps massively towards this.”

The care packages contain essentials like toilet paper, toothpaste and deodorant, plus staple foods like soup, and treats including hard boiled sweets, biscuits and chocolates.

Debbie Harrison, Joint Managing Director at Pricecheck UK, said:

“Supporting the local community has always been a key part of Pricecheck’s values and as we’ve been unable to fundraise as often as usual with recent events, we wanted to help in any way we could.

“We know that SCCCC plays an important part in supporting older people across the region.

"These people are often the most vulnerable in our communities and are likely to have been affected heavily by Covid-19 and we just hope that in some way our donation help with their care and may even put a smile on their faces.”

SCCCC has continued to provide its services to isolated, older people in Sheffield throughout lockdown.

Good Neighbour Scheme volunteers have swapped visits for phone calls to help keep older people company, dozens of people have responded to the newly launched Pen pal appeal and the charity has maintained the help it gives to older people when returning from hospital.
