Women of Steel The Concert
2nd October 2013
Sheffield's Women of Steel will become Women of Rock in November when the region's music stars and entertainers present a sparkling gig in the City Hall to raise money to erect a statue in their honour.
With more acts still to be announced the evening is set to be one to remember with performances already confirmed from: Heaven 17; Eliot Kennedy; John Shuttleworth; ABC's Martin Fry; John Reilly; Baby Bird; Philippa Hanna; John Tams; Ray Hearne; Joann Fletcher and Cornerstone Brass, who've just become regional champions. Plus appearances from: Dean Andrews from hit TV show Life on Mars; Reverend and the Makers' Jon McClure; Hirsty from Capital Radio. The concert will be one to remember as Sheffield celebrates its illustrious history. All acts are appearing for free in tribute to the hundreds of Sheffield women whose commitment, hard work and good nature made an amazing contribution to the city and the country during the World Wars, by uncomplainingly taking on the men's jobs in the steel works. The City wants to honour them with a statue outside the City Hall and the race is on to raise £150,000 so that the statue can be erected next year on the centenary of the First World War. The surviving women are now in their 80s and 90s and the one thing they want to see before they die is the statue they were promised unveiled as a celebration and inspiration for women in Sheffield and beyond. Sheffield's Lord Mayor; Council Leader Julie Dore; Master Cutler Neil MacDonald; Chamber of Commerce CEO Richard Wright and MPs Clive Betts; Paul Blomfield; David Blunkett; Meg Munn; Angela Smith and Nick Clegg are all backing the appeal and the concert. Tickets for the Women of Steel Concert, priced at £22, £20 (subject to booking fees) at Sheffield City Hall are available online through at www.sheffieldcityhall.co.uk through the ticket hotline on 0114 2 789 789 and in person at the Sheffield City Hall Box Office.
