Workplace Games glory for Team Activ

15th February 2016

Team Activ were crowned winners of the third South Yorkshire Workplace Games held in Sheffield.

The Barnsley-based sport and physical activity providers took the crown after competing against eight teams from seven workplaces in a variety of sporting challenges at the English Institute of Sport Sheffield. Teams battled for glory in five different disciplines including sitting volleyball, New Age Kurling, netball and rounders. Team Activ saw off last summer's winners, Sheffield Wednesday FC Community Programme, into second spot whilst there was a three-way tie for third between Sheffield Hallam Active, Santander and Dearne ALC. Other competing teams included Sheffield City Council, ITM Power and a second team from Dearne ALC. In addition to the trophy for the best performing team, awards were made to those who best showed the spirit of the Workplace Games. Dearne ALC won the team award for Spirit of the Games with Gary Lund (Sheffield City Council) and Louise Carpenter (Santander, Sheffield) taking the male and female individual prizes. Ian Cartwright, Business Manager at Team Activ said: -The South Yorkshire Workplace Games are right up our street and we're keen to practice what we preach, so we entered our team. We fell short of the minimum female requirement and so had points deducted, meaning it was even more of an achievement to win. -We really enjoyed the event, playing the games and meeting the other teams. We definitely gelled more as a team and I'd advise any business thinking of entering the next event to go for it it's a chance to socialise outside of the workplace and engage your team in healthy competition. South Yorkshire Sport Chief Executive, Nigel Harrison, added: -Congratulations to Team Activ and all the teams who took part in the Workplace Games. Many of the participants will spend a lot of their working day sat behind a desk so it was great to bring those people together in a setting which allows them to be active.
